Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a 2020 contender, released his tax returns on Monday after telling his supporters that documents would show he'd reached millionaire status. According to CNN, the senator reported a total family income of $566,421 in 2018—with $382,920 coming from writing and royalties and $18,950 given away to charity. Sanders' family reportedly made a total of $2.79 million between 2016-2018, due to rising book sales and his increasing political profile after his 2016 run. He also made $110 in music royalties in 2018, reportedly from his “We Shall Overcome” folk album. In a statement, Sanders said the documents shows that he and his family have been “very fortunate” in recent years. “I consider paying more in taxes as my income rose to be both an obligation and an investment in our country,” he said. “I will continue to fight to make our tax system more progressive so that our country has the resources to guarantee the American Dream to all people.”
