Chris Cornell’s Family Sues Doctor Over His Death

Family members of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell filed a lawsuit against his former doctor Thursday, accusing him of overprescribing drugs to the singer, the Associated Press reports. Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell, and their two children allege Dr. Robert Koblin’s prescriptions “led to erratic behavior” from Cornell before he was found dead last year. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, claimed Koblin “negligently and repeatedly” prescribed Cornell “dangerous mind-altering controlled substances” like the anti-anxiety drug Lorazepam. Cornell’s family alleged the drugs “impaired [his] cognition, clouded his judgment, and caused him to engage in dangerous impulsive behaviors that he was unable to control, costing him his life.” The suit also accuses Koblin of knowing about Cornell’s history of substance abuse and failing to “examine or consult with him” after prescribing the medications. Coroners ruled Cornell’s death a suicide by hanging, and concluded that “drugs were not a cause of death.”
