FIFA Considers Proposal To Produce The World Cup Every Two Years

FIFA is weighing whether to produce the World Cup every two years instead of every four years, a South American soccer official reportedly said Friday. Alejandro Dominguez, president of South America’s soccer organization,  Conmebol, said he submitted a pitch for a biennial World Cup to a FIFA meeting in Kigali, Rwanda last month, The New York Times reported. Dominguez maintains that staging the World Cup every two years is a better alternative to broadened continental championships, such as the Copa America. There have also been proposals to bring South American teams into a new European championship. While Dominguez says he’s not opposed to this suggestion, he suggested that FIFA weigh changes to the World Cup schedule instead, according to the Times. Potential changes to the World Cup are poised to cause tumult in the soccer world. Even the recent expansion from 32 teams to 48 for the 2026 World Cup faced stiff opposition before officials unanimously approved the shift.
