Up to 12,000 bodies have been uncovered in mass graves throughout northern and western Iraq, according to a new United Nations report. The remains belong to ISIS victims and include women, children, the elderly, those with disabilities, members of Iraq’s armed forces, police, and some foreign workers. Exhuming the bodies has been difficult due to the continued presence of ISIS in the region. So far only 1,258 remains have been recovered and the UN expects to uncover more graves in the coming months. “ISIL’s horrific crimes in Iraq have left the headlines but the trauma of the victims’ families endures, with thousands of women, men and children still unaccounted for,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said.
