Trump Administration Plans ‘Coal Promotion Event’ at U.N. Climate Talks

    Reuters / Leah Millis

The Trump administration is planning to gatecrash U.N. climate talks next month by staging a side event to promote fossil fuels, Reuters reports. The plan repeats a tactic from last year’s gathering in Germany, where the Trump administration highlighted the benefits of technologies that more efficiently burn fuels like coal. This year’s talks will take place in Katowice, Poland, a mining center that is one of the most polluted areas of Europe. The aim of the talks is to agree on a set of rules to back up the 2015 Paris climate agreement—the one that Trump withdrew from. However, in a sign Trump may drop his opposition to the Paris agreement, he reportedly plans to let State Department officials continue negotiating on the terms of it at the talks. The U.S. is the only country to have announced its intention to formally withdraw from the Paris accord; all other United Nations member nations have signed on.
