Trump ‘Wouldn’t Mind’ Ditching NAFTA for Separate Deals

President Donald Trump told reporters Friday that he “wouldn’t mind” disbanding NAFTA and making individual deals with Canada and Mexico, reports Bloomberg. “These are two very different countries,” Trump remarked. “But I wouldn’t mind seeing a separate deal with Canada, where you have one type of product, so to speak, and a separate deal with Mexico.” These comments echo the president’s repeated arguments that both countries took “advantage of us economically,” and come after days of sparring with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the new steel and aluminum tariffs. Leaving NAFTA would likely jeopardize the $1 trillion in goods that the U.S. exchanges with Mexico and Canada each year.
